Use the calculator before a full practice round

Start with the official pass rule, then compare your latest practice result. If the calculator says you are barely above the target, review missed signs and right-of-way rules before taking another full round.

Why the miss count is not enough by itself

A state may have a separate sign rule, a minimum question count, or a different process by applicant type. Treat the miss count as planning math, then open the state source before making test-day decisions.

FAQ

How many questions can I miss on the DMV permit test?

It depends on the state. For example, Florida and New Jersey use 40 correct out of 50, so the basic miss count is 10. Pennsylvania uses 15 correct out of 18, so the basic miss count is 3.

Why does New York mention road-sign questions separately?

New York's learner permit rule includes both an overall score and a road-sign condition. You need at least 14 correct overall and at least 2 of the 4 road-sign questions.

Can a practice score guarantee I will pass?

No. A practice score is a readiness signal, not an official result. Use the state source for final rules and retake one weak-area round before test day.
